I Humbly Accept Your Very Inspiring Blogger Award

One of the things about being a blogger that makes it so rewarding is stuff like this: being nominated for The Very Inspiring Blogger Award. This isn’t the first time I’ve been nominated for this award, and hopefully it won’t be the last.

You can read my previous Very Inspiring Blogger Award entries from December 2012 and March 2013.

This time around, I’ve been nominated by three bloggers: Sam, Tempest Rose, and Barbie Beaton. All three are favorite bloggers of mine, and if you haven’t read them yet, you better. Like, right now. Seriously.

I’m supposed to display the award, which I will. The one that Tempest Rose flew on her entry was pretty awesome, so that’s the flag I’m going to fly on this post. I’m a sucker for a Royal typewriter, after all.

And now…the rules (and I’m going to bend the rules, so sue me)

  1. Thank and link the amazing person(s) who nominated you – Done. And thank you again, Sam, Tempest Rose, and Barbie!
  2. List the rules and display the award – This is a little redundant, don’t you think…I’ll shut up now.
  3. Share seven facts about yourself – Sure, why not?
  4. Nominate 15 other amazing blogs and comment on their posts to let them know they have been nominated – I think 15 is excessive. But I will nominate bloggers who’ve been following me recently. Those of you who are new to Out Where the Buses Don’t Run have been warned.
  5. Proudly display the award logo on your blog and follow the blogger who nominated you – I believe this goes without saying.

Seven Facts About Me:

  1. I’m pleased to announce that Out Where the Buses Don’t Run is now being followed by more than 2,000 readers. For someone who had very modest ambitions when I started this blog, the fact that 2,000-plus people have signed on to read this blog gives me great incentive to keep this blog journey going. So I thank you all for reading and contributing. I do mean it when I say you have a lot to do with the success of this blog.
  2. I’ve developed a sudden and possibly debilitating (okay, I’m exaggerating) obsession with collecting vinyl records recently. I’ll blog more about this itch I can’t seem to stop scratching here soon, but I’ve been posting a lot about this on my Instagram feed as well.
  3. The title of this blog refers to a figure of speech that refers to one’s mental state, i.e., “his mind’s out where the buses don’t run.” It’s also the name of one of the best episodes of Miami Vice. Season Two, in fact.
  4. I recently celebrated my 12th wedding anniversary, on August 31st. But my wife and I consider September 16, 1998 to be our real anniversary; that’s the date we first started dating, and we’ve been together ever since.
  5. I was once the subject of a right-wing columnist’s rage in one of his ill-informed and rather ridiculous columns. It was another one of those “War Against Christmas” opinion pieces, and his column railed against “pagan non-believers like Gus Sanchez of Asheville.” Joke was on him, though, because he was responding to my rather sarcastic Letter to the Editor decrying the whole War on Christmas thing, wherein I signed my letter as “Gus Sanchez, Christmastime Pagan.”
  6. In my household, I’m the one who does the laundry. It’s been this way for more than a decade. I have a certain way of washing and folding, and I’m pretty fanatical about how the laundry gets done. So my wife pretty much has ceded control of this household chore over to me. Not that she’s complaining.
  7. Not that you’ve wondered, but I haven’t joined Twitter yet. I can’t decide whether it’s because I don’t need another online distraction, or whether the world doesn’t need me posting stupid shit like, “It’s occurred to me that Toto’s “Africa” is basically a prog-rock version of “Brown Sugar.” #meaningless

A Couple of “Real” and “Inspiring” Awards to Accept

A couple of awards to accept, the Very Inspiring Blogger Award, and the Reality Blogger Award.

I’ve been nominated three times in the past couple for a Very Inspiring Blogger Award. This isn’t the first time I’ve been nominated for this award, but I’m honored, as always, to accept such an award.

I’d like to thank Cheryl Brandreth, Tracy Cembor, and Cassie for thinking of me when nominating me for this award.

As with any award, there are rules to observe during your acceptance.

Rules for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award

  1. Display the award logo on your blog.
  2. Link back to the person(s) who nominated you.
  3. State 7 things about yourself.
  4. Nominate 15 bloggers for this award.
  5. Notify those bloggers of the nomination by linking to one of their specific posts so that they get notified by pingback.

Seven Things About Gus Sanchez

  1. I graduated from St. John’s University with a pre-law degree, with every intent of continuing on to law school.
  2. Six months’ worth of experience working as a corporate paralegal in a law firm convinced me I wasn’t cut out to be a lawyer.
  3. I had seriously considered switching majors in college; I considered majoring in journalism, but was talked out of it by an adviser because “there’s no money in journalism.”
  4. Now I’m a project manager/business analyst in Information Technology. How I got there is a really long and rather boring story.
  5. I really suck at keeping up with television shows; I have never seen a single episode of Breaking BadLost, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Doctor Who, and The Big Bang Theory.
  6. I’ve got a serious case of plantar fascitis that’s cramping my running style right now, and it’s seriously casting doubts on me running the Cooper River 10K Run in six weeks’ time.
  7. I have tried for more than 20 years to learn to play the guitar. At best, I can pick out the opening notes to I Can’t Get No Satisfaction, at worst, I can pick out that same song and it sounds like I’m all thumbs.

My Nominees…See Below

I’ve also been nominated for a Reality Blogger Award. This is my first nomination, and I’m very excited to be nominated for this award.

I’d like to thank Victoria Sawyer for nominating me for this award. It was unexpected, to say the least, and very honored to accept this award.

The Reality Award involves answering five questions, and nominating five bloggers. Here goes:

If You Could Change Something, What Would You Change?

My underwear? Kidding.

I would change perhaps some of the time I’d lost not pursuing my writing ambitions, bemoaning not living the writer’s life. I’ve learned I can balance my work/life responsibilities, and life the writer’s life, but I wish I’d gotten a start sooner.

If You Could Repeat An Age, What Age Would It Be?

Not so much an age but a year, and that year was 1994. For me, it was the year I felt I finally became an adult. Well, not really an adult, but it’s when I first started doing adult-like things, like earn a living and live on my own.

What One Thing Really Scares You?

Losing someone I love, i.e., my wife or my daughter.

What One Dream Have You Not Completed Yet Which You Think You Will Be Able to Complete?

Well, first off, there’s some dreams I know I won’t complete…playing the left wing for Manchester United, replace Daniel Craig as the next James Bond, and take apart and rebuild a 1967 Mercury Cougar.

However, my dream of becoming a published author is becoming more and more a reality with each passing day. My blog anthology is being finalized as we speak, and I’m anticipating a late-spring publishing date, and my debut novel is still a work-in-progress, but it will be published, damn it!

If You Could Be Someone For a Day, Who Would it Be?

This guy. Anthony Bourdain. I’d murder a bus full of nuns to have his job just for one day. I’ve never missed a single episode of “No Reservations” or “The Layover,” and I’ve read all his books. Hell yeah, I’d love to travel, eat, and write, and get paid filthy sums of money to do all three.

Very Inspiring Blogger Award

It’s been my honor to have been nominated twice now for a Very Inspiring Blogger Award. I thank Michelle at Wake Up Tired and Will at What If It All Means Something for nominating me. They’re two of my favorite bloggers, and I invite and encourage you to read their blogs for their perspectives on life and writing and everything in between.

As I said, it’s an honor to accept this award. It’s recognitions like these that validate my blog and my attempts at blogging. Now, on to the awesome responsibilities I must assume since accepting this award:

  1. Display the Very Inspiring Blogger Award logo. (check)
  2. Link back to the person(s) nominating me. (check)
  3. State seven things about myself.
  4. Nominate 15 other bloggers for this award.
  5. Notify those bloggers of said nomination.

I’m going to tweak the rules a bit, but first, those seven things about myself.

  1. I write left-handed, and am ambidextrous with just about any task involving my hands.
  2. I’ve never broken a single bone in my body.
  3. My cholesterol level hasn’t been above 150 in over a decade.
  5. Favorites? Favorite film: Seven Samurai. Favorite novel: Gravity’s Rainbow. Favorite album: Quadrophenia.
  6. I have an irrational hatred for Brussels sprouts. Pure, unfiltered hatred wrapped in teeny green roughage. I fucking hate them.
  7. Since I turned 41 about two months ago, I learned the secret to what makes you happy after turning 40: comfortable house shoes.

Okay, now on to the nominations…instead of me nominating, I’d like to present a roll call of the bloggers (in addition to Michelle and Will’s respective blogs) you should be reading as well. For those bloggers who are finding themselves on this list, consider this your nomination. I mean, it is like a nomination. I guess what I’m saying is I’m too lazy to visit your blog and let you know you’ve been nominated. So there.
